If you see any street time, i.e. driving to/from the track, then steam holes are a must. If the engine operates primarily above 3500 rpm, then you may go ahead and plug them. One 406 we sprayed with 2 kits totaling 350 hp runs 9.90 @ 3600 # in street trim spinning it 7600 rpms. I just put two more 406's together and one of them has the cracks.

WebJul 9, 2010 · Most stock blocks have this area not drilled. So if you want to improve cooling on a 400 block, or any SBC block for that matter, use the head gasket as a template and drill the holes yourself. The 1/8" steam holes are too small to make any difference. To further improve cooling on a SBC, run water lines from the rear of the manifold to the front.
